The Salon des Refuses
Every year there are new items to be found, ranging from coffee and pepper grinders to riddling racks and settles. Are these terms familiar to you? A riddling rack is composed of two large hardwood slabs, hinged at the top and with multiple round holes. They were used to manually turn champagne bottles during the production process! And what about a settle? This is a large wooden bench usually with arms and a high back, long enough to accommodate three or four sitters. Olive presses, large glass bottles, enamel jugs and fountains are always popular. What about an absinthe spoon? This is put across the top of a glass and lump of sugar is placed on it. Absinthe is then poured onto the sugar and the resultant mixture drains into the glass!
